As we have done for many years, Nar Shaddaa Base has joined the Midwest Garrison at the annual Bartlett 4th of July Parade. We have moved up through the ranks of the parade from being one of the last units, to being right near the front.

Rebels Present:

Crix
Jim - iam8114
Jack Killian
Darryl - R2 S5
Augie
Kim Webster
Cheryl Whitaker (undercover in Medic Scout)
Eric Pfieffer - also undercover in Scout
New Outlaw recruit - Kyle

This is a huge endeavor as we not only have (as you can see by the first photo) a large amount of participants, we also have a cookout afterwards. A LOT of people need to be shuttled around and a lot of set up is needed. Most every year you can count on this day being one of the hottest days of the year...a couple years ago the temp was 98 degrees with humidity about as high.

My Jeep is always in the parade as the Rebel Medical Frigate to take in those who can't complete the parade route due to heat exhaustion or dehydration...there is always a cooler of water in the back of the Frigate..

I usually have someone else drive the "Frigate" while I march and hand out marshmallows to the crowd...
this year Tie Pilot and Tusken Raider "Big Ed" donned the RFT helmet to pilot the Frigate...

it also serves to shuttle those who have a costume malfunction...
Rebel Doughboy can be seen in the back of the Jeep...he had a slight problem with his TK...happens to us all...

Darryl had his awesome transport and Droid with him:

Outlaw Squadron had all of its pilots present...plus a new recruit who is just finishing up his Pilot...

A Princess between two of the Empire's finest...

Captain Rex joins in...

mass chaos before we step off...

and this great photo of the Outlaws....sans me...lol...
I am usually running around like a chicken..

But the old-timer can still march with the best of them...even in my advanced years....

Wink

Next year...back to wearing the RFT....it is a much less hot costume to wear....

Very Happy

To those who know of or who have attended a Relay For Life - no explanation is necessary. For those who have not attended one, Relay For Life is an overnight event held by and for families who have dealt with loss to cancer on a most personal level.

My friends Sally and Mark have been hit hard by cancer's blow and several years back asked me to attend a Relay event with my fellow Garrison and Base mates. She knew I did this "sort of thing" but was unsure exactly what it was that we do. Sally is someone I volunteer with doing natural areas restoration and butterfly monitoring. The first year 5 of us showed up to that Relay and Sally and Mark saw first hand the reaction to the Relay participants at that event in Frankfort IL. Once her hometown of New Lenox established their own Relay, Sally asked us to come back. Again the reaction by the crowd last year was very positive so this year the organizers of the event asked us to please return and they themed the nights activities based on our appearance.

In addition to being there for the purpose of the organizers, we had an additional mission...
we were there to remember our own losses to cancer in our families and for the loss of 3 very special little Troopers. Our little Troopers were 3 young boys who lost their fight with cancer and whose families had asked us to be a part of their child's struggle through Make A Wish and through a request made via The Jedi Assembly many years back.

We honored our Little Troopers by purchasing luminaria for them in rememberance. Seeing the photos of these 3 littlest Troopers and hearing their names read during the roll call is very solemn.

We took the silent lap around the track following the Luminaria ceremony for:

Isaac Wright
Max Lacewell
Vincent Villaci

My sincere thanks to our participants. It certainly is not easy to work all day
battle traffic home
grab your costume
suit up in 90 degree heat
and then go out and troop

Through all that, our participants (as always) showed their good humor and grace under pressure.

PARTICIPANTS (in no particular order): aka saints

DK Books in conjunction with Barnes & Noble bookstores all over the country launched a new and very beautiful book called "Star Wars Year By Year".

As with previous DK releases, the 501st was contacted to provide support at over 30 Barnes and Noble stores for a little "launch party".

With most of the available Midwest Garrison members on duty at Wizard World, The Wisconsin Garrison was generous and sent two of their members, Stephanie Bidrick and Geoff Pfeiffer down to IL to cover the Oak Brook event with me and Artoo. We were thrilled to have Thomas "Crix" Turner and his son Luke join us.

For the nationwide participation of 501st, Rebel Legion, TJA, and R2 Builders groups, DK will be making a donation to Make-A-Wish.

I have to tell you, I have done a LOT of events in a LOT of different venues and the store employees at the Barnes & Noble in Oakbrook were some of the finest people I have ever had the privelige of working with.

The store had plenty for the kids to do with making masks, coloring, and several contests. I brought along some temporary tatoos, my new RFT Trading cards, and a spare RFT helmet and blaster for the kids to use while taking photos.

PARTICIPANTS:

TK/TB/TS 4813 Geoff Pfeiffer - event coordinator
TX/TS 4814 - Stephanie Budrick - Rebel Legion-Nar Shaddaa Base
IC 4913 - Thomas "Crix" Turner - Rebel Legion-Nar Shaddaa Base-The Jedi Assembly
TK/ID 1951 - Phyllis Schulte - Rebel Legion-Nar Shaddaa Base- The Jedi Assembly - R2 Builders Club
Artoo Gochi - droid

Some great moments:

Between yesterday's Barnes and Noble/DK release...and this event...I was one busy Rebel this weekend....

Last month an important transmission was received from Lucasfilm via Mary Franklin. The Chicago Legoland Discover Ceter in Schaumburg was holding its first ever "Star Wars Weekend". The 501st was contacted and asked to provide support and judges for the planned costume contests to be held. Where we could not provide support on Saturday, we were able to come in force on Sunday. I took on the job of event coordinator.

Thanks go out to River, and Jason, Carolyn, and Alyssa Patterson who assisted both me and the employees of Legoland conduct two costume contests.

To say that a good time was had by all is probably an understatement...
and never let it be said that Darth Vader does not have a sense of whimsy as Jason Patterson (along with Jeff Baron on the Legoland Ewok ride) provided the spectators PLENTY of whimsical moments.

Even the Dark Lord of the Sith had to wait his turn...

Then there was this rather amusing moment....

While patrolling the halls...I heard screams of terror and wondered what it was...
turns out that Drew Dziura in his Jawa costume had left quite the impression on a few of the kids. Drew decided to suit down early rather than spread trauma throughout the center.

Crix and Luke decided that the President needed some Jedi security...

And there were plenty of photo ops...

Artoo Gochi tried to strike up a conversation with the other R2...but really didn't get anywhere...

Big thanks go out to all our participants..please let me know if I have forgotten anyone.

PARTICIPANTS:

Jason Patterson - SL 1719 - Darth Vader
Alyssa Patterson - Tie Pilot
Ryan Patterson - Imperial Crew
Carolyn Patterson – Shaak Ti
Joe Rivera - CC 3166 - Captain Rex - RL -
Bob Dziura - TK1656 - Stormtrooper
Drew Dziura - Jawa
Neil Auer - TK 3446 - Stormtrooper
Gehrig Auer - Jawa
Thomas "Crix" Turner IC 4913- Jedi - RL-TJA -
Luke Turner - Jedi
Matt McDonald - TK 8148 - Stormtrooper
Jessica Hudak - Padme Lake Dress –
Jeff Baron – TI 9131
Phyllis "Schph Gochi" Schulte - TK 1951-X-Wing Pilot - RL-TJA-R2 Builders
Artoo Gochi - R2 D2

On Saturday, September 25th, members of the Wisconsin Garrison, Nar Shaddaa Base, and the R2 Builders teamed up for another successful event at the Build-a-Bear Workshop in Madison, WI. This event was part of a serious of events at Build-a-Bear stores nationwide to promote the release of a new line of Star Wars products.

Members patrolled the store and encouraged mall shoppers to come inside the store. R2D2 was especially good at drawing in the curious customers. The store took digital photos of customers with us and then printed them on-site, giving them to customers in a special BAB frame. Many children left the store with new bears in the various SW costumes available. Our own members did plenty of shopping as well and left the store with several new bears of their own.

In attendance:
Sara Zeman - Mara Jade
Phil Zeman - Luke Skywalker
Dee Culp - Princess Leia
Sara Kujawa - Imperial Crew
Zach Wagner - Biker scount
Paul Hayden - R2 controller

In a final fundraising event for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer members of the 501st Legion and Rebel Legion United Team faced off in front of Berkot's Grocery Store in Mokena IL...

It was a classic Star Wars event...

The Empire VS The Rebellion in a no holds barred, winner take all, donation smackdown...

The Empire won the day with a winning strategy of Boba Fett holding on to Vader's head with Steve properly scowling and scaring the $$ out of Mokena wallets....
while my Rebellion ace in the hole..
Artoo
remained only a silent door stop (found out that IPODs do not like the cold-the IPOD which powers Artoo's voice didn't work when I set him up...got the IPOD into the house where it was warm...and voila'....it worked again.... sigh)

At the end of the day...
it was the Empire with $161.00 and the Rebellion with $120.00 -
add in the change (which was not initially counted), a few bucks from the Jedi costume raffle, and a few bucks from me just to make a nice round number...
and we collected $310.00 for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

I can't thank our participants enough for attending. The wind was really biting and poor Matt was probably white underneath his armor as well. We cut our day a little short....so $310.00 in about 2 1/2 hours is nothing to sneeze at.

Thanks to our participants:

TD 8310 Rob Hamilton - Boba Fett
ID 3052 Steve Szyndrowski - Imperial Officer
IC 4913 Thomas "Crix" Turner - X-Wing Pilot
TK 8148 Matt Mc Donald - Stormtrooper
Janine Jender - Jedi
Ashley McClintock Support
Jessica Hudak - Support
TK 1951 - me - Jedi
Artoo Gochi - deaf mute and door stop R2D2

The Mokena Messenger came out to interview us and took a bunch of photos...
and...
some folks came in because they saw us from the street....
all in all I have to say
Thank you fellow Troopers and Thank you Mokena residents!

Looks like Crix is estimating if the Rebellion's coffee can was as full as the Empires...

Artoo met a new friend:

Unfortunately we did not get as many pictures for this event as I would have liked!
Here are the three I have:

Our members weren't the ONLY one who had trouble sitting down! Wink

$6,767.01!!

As of this writing, that figure is the total amount of donations that our Making Strides Against Breast Cancer team recorded.

We had no big sponsors, backers, or funds matching. This was literally a dollar by dollar effort.

The effort started in ernest at Wizard World with Jen and Anthony's raffle and Fitz' target range events.
My thanks to them.

We also had two donation station efforts in Algonquin and Mokena. Again, my thanks to all who particpated.

I had some successes with my armbands for donation, the raffle of home canned jams and produce at the Master Gardener Pot Luck and the Jedi Costume raffle.

To put the icing on the cake, Rob Hamilton and Janine Jender launched a highly successful patch sale.

My thanks go out to all who beat up their families, friends and co-workers for donations. Thanks also to those who crawled out of bed early on Sunday morning and showed up to walk with remarkable enthusiasm. To all of our grizzled veterans and the awesome new members and recruits that came.

I think that the American Cancer Society said it best when they asked us to lead the walk as it stepped off. It was indeed a great honor.

My deepest and most sincere thanks to all of our partipants!

I was thrilled to meet 3 new NSB members in one day...

Valissa
Samantha
and
Dylan

I hope to see you all often!!

We never do anything in a small way around here. October 17th was one of those days we did not one, but two very large events.

Several years back we had been asked to do an event at Brookfield Zoo for "Zoo Stars". I had been hoping that the Zoo would require our services again and that call up came a couple months ago. We were given a choice of dates and voted to do both the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer AND the Boo At the Zoo event the same date. MSABC was very early AM and the Zoo was early afternoon.

Piece of cake.

We arrived on time (most of us coming from Aurora), suited up and were ready for our close up at 12:30 PM.- the results you see above. After the group photo we lined up in our Marching order and at 1:00 PM stepped off.

Turns out we were not just an important part of the parade, in a lot of ways, we were the parade.

The weather was beautiful, the Zoo was mobbed, and I think all of the Zoo goers along the parade route we glad to see us. You could hear shouts from the crowd as favorite characters went by.

After the parade was over, we did a bit of meet and greet outside of the Discovery Center and then many of our group went out to have a little fun at the Zoo.

My sincere thanks to one and all for making this parade a success AND a heck of a lot of great fun.

What an EVENT! We had more troopers than kids, but the kids that were there were awestruck by the troopers.
Unfortunately I arrived late due to a flat tire Sad Embarassed ...BUT in true trooper form, a game of pass the thermal detonator was well underway! TI4438 and TI4026 brought prizes for the winners. The kids beat out all the troopers! The kids had the activity packets and were able to get autographs from all the troopers!! Goody bags were then passed around to moms and kids and family/kid pictures were taken. The moms had as much fun as the kids and were amazed at the different costumes.

It has been quite a few days and EVERYONE at the shelter is STILL a buzz from the event. The kids are still talking about their new friends and I believe we have at least one mini-trooper in the making! Smile I am waiting for pictures from the Children Director and will be posting those! Smile At a time in their lives when they have very little, these families were able to relax and enjoy a few hours of halloween! They had something to look forward to and a story to tell for a looooong time. I cannot thank the troopers who were able to make it enough. I know that this is going to be the talk of the Crisis Center for some time! Smile

I believe this is everyone who attended...I was a bit of mess that day so please let me know my mistakes! Smile
