I'm interested in maybe going. If any other ladies go, would anyone be interested in sharing a room? I'm thinking that if I go, I'll arrive either on Friday the 14 and get set up in the room and leave right after the con on Sunday and just drive home that night. So I'll need a room for two nights.

Tempting. Very tempting.

How crazy and wild do we want to go about the car pooling? I googled the directions and its about a 7 & 1/2 hour drive. Would people want to drive out Friday and relax at the hotel Friday night, or is anyone crazy enough to get up early Saturday morning, like say leave Phoenix at 4:00am to arrive around 12:00pm?

I admit to a bit of the crazies, so that's why I ask. Wink

Yes its about 8 hours from Phoenix. However I suggest keeping an eye on Southwest for flight deals, you can usually get round trip for fairly cheap to ABQ. It could end up being cheaper to fly than drive.

However if people are interested in driving I think we should leave Friday and either book it all the way through or stop halfway. We can stay at my parents house in St. Johns which is about the halfway point, get up early on Saturday and drive the rest. If there are enough of us though it would be nice to arrive Friday.

I believe Monday is a holiday so we could always take our time driving back and stay over in SJ Sunday night.

Well...the whole event ticket is only $25.

Depending on how much splitting a hotel room would cost and gas money, it might actually be doable for me.

Because, really, who doesn't want to meet Deep Roy?

If someone ends up driving, I might be interested in getting a ride with them. I'm outside Tucson, right off the freeway, so on the way. IF I end up being able to go at all Razz .

Most of the folks on here are from the Phoenix/Mesa area. Your ride would need to be coming from Tucson. Albuquerque is North along I-40. You could go I-10 to I-25 and then North to Albuquerque.

Or if you have a friend up here that you can stay with and can get here the day before or something, then catch a ride out.

Playing with math:

My best guess at the cost of gas for a round trip is $120 (using my car mileage and gas under $3 per gallon). Split between two is $60, split three is $40, split 4 is $30.

One night stay at the Aluquerque Hilton is $134.47 ($119 + $15.49 tax; the con rate is two nights - Friday and Saturday - at $99 + tax a night). Split between two is ~$68; split three is ~$45; split 4 is ~$34.

Weekend ticket is $25.

Assume minimum food budget $20 (i.e. pack snacks/Pop Tarts for breakfast/lunch, go out for dinner once at a restaurant, rest fast food).

So theoretical cost for two people = $173
Three people = $130
Four people = $109

This does not include buying anything at the convention (signatures, comic books, etc).

Also working in theory, a fifth person might be in one car, but that will be a tight fit for an eight hour drive.

Working in practicality, remember that Christmas is the month before so you'll get all of your holiday bills in January. Not to be a wet blanket, but just wanted to point out all the angles.

Wow Carol, you want to get into cost accounting? Nice breakout.

I'm debating on going, it sounds like a fairly affordable excuse to get out of the valley.

Ah good point. It is possible I could get up to Phoenix to catch a ride from there Smile .

Lady Jedi, if your numbers are right, then I'd be more then happy to try and get up there to go with someone. At this point, I can afford that easily Smile . (and besides, it would be cool to celebrate 21 years at a con Smile )

I don't have any formal accounting training, but I have five years of planning for convention experience. Wink Very Happy

No worries. Thumbs up I am really excited for Phoenix Comicon 2011 and Dragon*Con 2011 myself, and its important to have priorities.

I got a big car repair bill recently and I'm not sure I can make this trip myself. Sad
