lookin good man. now that we have tons of shots of that helmet I would be great to get a resculpt. I always wondered how big the richies bucket was so I'm glad your putting up some good size comparison shots. Your improvements are deffinitely taking this helmet to the next level.
keep up the good work.

I never realized the inaccuracies of the Richie's helmet, before this thread.

So I also need to start thinking about some other bits RA left out. Luckily I got my trusty Star Wars Blueprints: Rebel Edition and its got a nice diagram of the parts of the helmets.

I need to make the slot for the identity chip and make the chip itself as well as the Flight systems input jack at the neck.

Also got a nice pic of Keyan Farlander in his Y-Wing gear and im liking the helmet design I might use it for inspiration when it comes time to paint my own.

I wonder why they didn't give that other greeblie on the left side of the helmet some sort of name?

Who knows?

Maybe its just an exposed section of the inside of the helmet. Perhaps something to consider when I do the inside detailing. Yes I am going to detail the inside, this is going to be a deluxe helmet. One of the many perks of taking my time.

Update:

Ok so im moving into the "Death or Glory" part of this build I will be cutting out the section in red and rebuilding the chin to be rounded instead of flat.

Wish me luck. Ill post pics when im done.

how come you don't just build it up instead of cutting it off? Do you think it would make the helmet to front heavy?

Its really more of an issue of stability rather than weight. If i built it up on top it would need some sort of skeletal support or it could break easily and that would be more work. Also the area on the chin circled in yellow is raised so that lip under the section where the leather goes would look wierd and off.

So let me show you what im doing right now. I cut it in a way that I can use the natural curves in the helmet to essentially just rebuild the chin with sheet styrene and fix up any gaps and edges with bondo.

So far so good, sometimes I amaze even myself.

All that is left now is to put a second layer of cut to shape plastic in the open slot that matches the thickness of the helmet and fill the gaps.

Keep up the nice work. I had never noticed how off the RA helmet was. This will be a gem with the research done and time spent.

Ive been doing a little more looking at the vests and I found a higher resolution shot of the briefing room and ive noticed a couple things.

In the red circle ive identified almost for sure that the greeblies on the right side next to and slightly beneath the hose are two things above two smaller things, The two top things may be interconnected but im not sure. These are probably kind of like the random greeblies on the B-Wing vest under the box meaning thye could be just about anything and the quick up close shots from rebel assault 2 dont really help much

In the yellow cirlce is what intrigues me. It would appear to be a flap of a pocket of some sort which would make that rather plain left side a little less plain. It might have been what I mistook for ribbed pattern like on my template

With some more people building Y-wingers, I thought I'd bump this.

definitely gives a great amount of inspiration!

is there a good source for Richie's helms other than Richie's? (just curious, since you all are the experts)

Nope, right now Richies is the sole supplier of Y-wing helms.

Hopefully there will be another supplier or two of the Y-wing helmet one day, and hopefully a more accurate helmet. I've been tempted to get a helmet myself (not sure if I'll do the outfit, though) but if I'm paying that much money for one I'd much rather have an accurate helmet than one that isn't accurate.
