EVENT:
On June 17th, members of Garrison Carida and Echo Base joined forces to bring world cultures and mythologies to life at Penn State DuBois' "Galactic Training Academy". The course was part of Penn State's "Kids In College" program, a summer outreach program that is part of the University's participation in Pennsylvania's STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Initiative. Students spent the week learning about world cultures and mythologies, ancient and modern, through the Star Wars universe. Thursday was an opportunity for the students to see first-hand some of the costumes, helmets, masks and props that we had been talking about all week, and to ask questions about the costumes/characters represented.

PARTICIPANTS:
Maul "SL-3871" Zabrak (Carida), though he did not dress for the event, brought his Darth Maul robes and saber and gave an insightful talk on the cultural and mythical significance of his costume. Tim "Endorscout64" Levan (Carida/Echo Base) trooped in his Tusken costume and shared with the kids some of the connections between Tuskens and traditional Bedouin culture, as well as the origins of many of the props in Star Wars. Andrew "TX 2398" Marzka (Carida) trooped in his Black Hole Trooper costume and brought his Imperial Guard costume along. He spoke with the kids about some of the work involved in prop-building, using his Imperial Guard staff as an example. Dave "TB 5414" Johnston (Carida) talked about the distinctiveness of his Scout Trooper costume, while Shawn "SL 9162" Arbuckle (Carida) introduced the kids to the story of Darth Nihilus and showed some of the work that went into his costume. Wally "Sgt. Carida" Peters (Carida/Echo Base) wins the "Hardest-Working-Trooper" of the day award for trooping as Captian Rex for the first half of the event, then slipping away and changing to his newly-minted ROTS Anakin costume for the second half. Yours truly, "Noh'kri Mahim" (Echo Base) acted as onsite event coordinator, course instructor and Q&A facilitator for the day.

HIGHLIGHTS:

Our classroom became the most popular place on campus as the kids and their families, University staff and students and Kids In College staff and volunteers all came in for pictures, autographs, tattoos and hands-on exploration of costumes, helmets and props. The kids were a very well-informed group of hardcore SW fans, who asked some surprisingly nuanced questions and interacted very ably with the presenters. (At one point, Maul as so impressed with one of the students' answers he invited the kid to just come up and sit on the panel!)

This was the first troop for the 501st/RL in this part of Pennsylvania, and the first time that there has been an appearance at Penn State DuBois. People are telling me today that kids in other Kids In College classes today have been bringing their lightsabers to their own (non-SW-related) classes, so it sounds like we definitely made our mark!

MEDIA:
The event was covered by a photographer brought in by the University, and also by the local NBC affiliate, WJAC-TV out of Johnstown/State College. Penn State will also be sending out a press release on the Kids In College program, which will highlight in part the Galactic Training Academy and the RL/501st.

Please allow me to personally thank the members who came out in the middle of a weekday from all over the state to make this event "a day long remembered" on campus. Thanks to Tim Levan for working to coordinate between Echo Base and Carida, for Maul Zabrak for bringing his expertise and PR prowess to the event and interview, for Wally Peters for double-timing as Rex/Anakin, for Andy Marzka for lugging an extra costume and mannequin for his Imperial Guard display (and standing up the whole day--because he had to!), for Shawn Arbuckle and his "seeing-eye Sith" Candy for taking a sick day to come to DuBois, and (last but not least) for Dave Johnston and Tim Levan for forever changing the way I will look at the Nittany Lion mascot:

Hey KIC troopers,

Proud to say our little maneuver in DuBois has made it into the "Diplomatic Mission" section of the latest edition of Comlink.

You know, sometimes I amaze even myself...
