Hi, everyone.

I'm definitely no expert on Leia's senatorial dress, but mine came out more or less okay so I went ahead and put together a tutorial to share how I made it. Perhaps it might help others who struggle with sewing and pattern making as much as I do!

Just a note for those "Tall" Leias. You may need to make this in two pieces with the seam hidden by the belt, otherwise the sleeves will be too short.

And I totally understand the "dress within a dress" stitching mindbender! I didn't have a dress form, and was about ready to rip my hair out!

Nice tutorial Pam. I wish I had it when I was making my Leia dress.

Thanks for this tutorial. I'm using it now to make a new dress to display at upcoming cons for the Canadian Base.

I'm slow going on it, because I've got a zillion projects at once, but I am working on a tutorial for this dress with a waist seam. I can't promise when it'll be up though... Rolling Eyes

I sewed mine a little differently. I sewed the 2 layers as in the tutorial, and then sewed them to one another at the wrists.

Next I did the same thing with the slit in the back - folding the edges under and pinning, then turning the 2 layers inside out (going in from the bottom of the dresses) and sewing them. That way you get a nice clean edge along that slit. I then sewed the bottoms to one another, pulling the fabric up through the neck hole.

Then I attached the hoodlet and collar as in the tutorial.

it should be hooks, I only use 2 one on top of the collar and one at the bottom of the collar leaving the keyhole "open"

Yup, that's exactly what I used, too. There is one hook that is just slightly above the collar seam, and one that's near the top of the collar. They're white, so you can just barely see them in the gap of my collar in this picture. (I really should take a closeup of that for the tutorial... I'll add it to my ever-expanding to-do list!)

Pam :-)

P.S. Thanks for the kind comments and the additional ideas, everyone!

Nicely done Pam! I'm on my I think, 4th or 5th version of the dress. I always almost blow my head off with the hidden seam allowances, but I always sewed the layers together from the start, ending with the sleeves, and let me tell you, that gets insane trying to figure out which way to turn it inside out and which way to sew! I may have to try the fabric you were talking about, because I currently have a seam in the middle of my dress (hidden by my belt) because although I'm not tall (5'3"), I seem to have long arms. Anyway, thanks for the website!

I have an OR jedi costume that I regularly troop in, and am just getting tired of being called Princess Leia... not really tired of it... but it's frustrating... so I have decided to start on Leia's gown from ANH! I'm so excited to use your tutorial, Pam! I helped a friend do a Mara Jade a couple of years ago and love your simple instructions. I am not an expert seamstress, and I don't get bogged down in the terms and lingo.
I'm ordering fabric this week and will start straight away!

Pam you rock! Whenever I finish my lineup of two more costumes after my Mara I know where to go for Leia.
