I am looking for suggestions on how to transport FX Lightsabers on a plane trip. I am worried about them getting broken. Input from the veteran traveling Jedi would be greatly appreciated. _________________

Or, if you have still got the boxes it came in (both th black and the brown cardboard one), use them and check it in as fragile.
Worked for me. _________________

Is your blade detachable? If so, you can wrap the hilt and blade in separate towels to put in your luggage. _________________

We used "carrying cases" made from 3" plastic sewer pipe with insulation tube inside and some padding around the hilt part.
There was the mounting socket in the end of tube so I put end cap there and to other end I made cap from joining socket and end cap.
I measured the tube that way that the saber cant jiggle in there. _________________ "Space may be the final frontier but it's made in a Hollywood basement" RHCP, Californication |

I used a ski flight case (made for transporting skis on planes) its a hard case and as they adjust for the length of your skis they can be sized to perfectly fit your sabre. I put it in the original box and then stuffed the rest of the case with my t-shirts. I used my Dad's which has a built in luggage tag which made it very easy to find and since it is designed for planes they knew how to handle it without an issue. And it has wheels on one end making it easier to get too and from the airport/hotel. Dad's is a bit fancy (he used to bring skis on business trips so had to look like he thereby the company was doing well) but I know there are inexpensive ones at sports shops - and some of the newer ones even come padded (I will admit I was looking for my skis so at the extra big ones for 2 sets so I'm not sure of the specs on the smaller ones but if the big ones are that affordable I would guess that the little ones are even better.) _________________

I like that idea, I was thinking of looking at golf cases made to travel, but I'll bet the Ski travel cases would be even better. |

PVC tube and pipe caps work great, too.... if you are looking for a cheap solution.

This is what I have done in the past with my FX saber. I put it in it's original box and then put it in my golf club case along with a whole bunch of shoes (there is a TON of room in a golf club case!). Then I just checked it in at the airport. Worked slick!
Another idea is if you are traveling with friends you can put 3-4 FX sabers in one golf club case... |

an inexpensive hard rifle case can be found at a army surplus store for around 15.00 and usualy has places for locks. The cases I've seen you can put 3-4 sabers in. I have several friends that use them. _________________ What's the matter Col. Sanders? Chicken?! |

I use Drafting or blueprints tubes that are padded on the inside _________________ 'Just because I don't like to fight. Doesn't mean I can't' |

To protect my sabres when going to events I built a simple carrying case using the right size pool tube (like the kids use in swimming). I wrapped the tube in cheap vinyl and stitched it with D-rings top and bottom. The lid is just one of those plastic measuring cups from liquid detergent.
If you need more rigidity then notch along the outside length of the pool tube and slide some lengths of aluminum flat rod down each side.
I get some compliments on the case at events, but if they knew how simple it was to make they would be surprised.
Hope this helps! |
