With a very interesting discussion going on at The Jedi Assembly...
and several hot weather events coming up ...
my next project is going back to my Jedi roots and developing a summer Jedi.
One of our TJA members is trying to prepare for the hot nature of CV and suggested several out of the box Jedi ideas for warm weather...
one of them I REALLY liked and is my next costume project..
the summer Jedi..
My plans are an outer tunic that is sleeveless in a dark chocolate crinkle gauze...
a long sleeve...or perhaps even short sleeve undertunic in a tan color crinkle gauze that will only come mid rib so there will be no layer at the waist...you will not see that it is mid rib as it will, of course, be hidden under the sleeveless outer tunic....
It will also incorporate the usual tabard and obi configuration...
and I might even shop for some shorter brown boots on e-bay or now that stores are selling off some winter items...sometimes when I finish a troop in Jedi I can barely get my boots off because the pants inside are soaked and sticking to the inside of the boot.
thankfully...
I already have a whole lot of the crinkle gauze in my stash as I bought it when it was put on sale quite a while ago...
Out of all of my costumes....Jedi is the second hottest costume...
with Hoth as the most brutally hot....
but my Hoth may go down a notch as I did cut out the lining on the top and in the sleeves...
Jedi is even hotter than Stormtrooper....I can say that for sure...lol...
so....
what do you think?
I will share updates as I go along...
since I have done soooooooooooooooo many Jedi costumes...this one should be easy...

If you're going for a cool summery outfit, I would HIGHLY suggest going with a lighter color rather than chocolate brown. The dark colors absorb the sun/heat where the light colors reflect it. _________________ ~Mieal |

too late....lol...
already cut the fabric yesterday....
and I am using that because I have it already and don't have to buy it...
it will still be lots lighter I think even in the sun...and lots of times when we do outdoor events...there is a bit of shade to be found...
besides....
ANYTHING sleeveless and short sleeved with a layer missing at the waist will still be a lot cooler...
I also decided to make the undertunic short sleeved with an eliptacle sleeve and put one of these insignias on the sleeve...
probably in an iron on transfer _________________

Sounds interesting, looking forward to seeing it.
For Florida I wear my light colored Jedi but I've worn my chocolate in the heat as well in Atlanta.
I have my inner tunics so I can remove the sleeves from under my outer tunic (they connect by velcro). I then wear a summer robe---when I wear the robe----very very light wgt.
I've also noted that under armer helps a great deal as well.
I know for the hot weather I tend to wear very light wgt pants with it--so they can breath better. _________________ Jedi Knight Janqui

lol...
Pat...I don't think I have ever seen you sweat...
It can be midsummer...
and Pat will have her full garb on....
AND robe...and no sweat will be evident on her...
I can stand outside without a robe in the dead of winter in my Jedi costume and still be sweating my behind off...

hahahahaha your sort of right on that.
Of course I like the heat. I can't stand the cold weather.
Even in winter I can freeze in full layered Jedi garb including wool robe.lol _________________ Jedi Knight Janqui

Well....somewhere I picked up a nasty bug....
so I am sick...and don't feel much like sewing any more today...
I did get the short sleeved undertunic done.....
I really like it...
I got most of the sleeveless outer tunic also done...
but
egad...
I don't think I could have picked a worse fabric to work with...
It is a chocolate brown stretch gauze...and it is just MISERABLE to work with...
I am down to the neckband....which I always have trouble with anyway...
and it is just curling at the sides because of the bias....
I had to put it away before I blew my brains out....
I feel lousy anyway...
no sense in also driving myself nuts....
I think the tabards are also going to be a challenge....
I do have the Obi done... _________________

Hello friends... [waves]
Phyllis,
OK, I know this project has gone onto plan B, but...
Re: cutting the gauze and even calcutta on the bias for the neck.... tape it.
Right after you cut it, before you even stay-stitch, run a strip of that blue removable painter's tape along the entire seam allowance.
I use a roll of the 1 inch and tear it in half lengthwise. That makes it 1/2 inch wide, which will "clear" the stitching for a 5/8 inch seam allowance.
I also do this for the arm-holes and the waist... anything where you have to match up different directions of grain or something cut on the bias. After my tug of war with my first tunic (and you probably remember I had struggles with that!) this has been a lifesaver....
And Pat, I'm like you... I can't stand to be cold... it's cold enough down here in Atlanta... I don't know how y'all stand it... Strong women!
I sweat to death in my Jedi.... but I feel almost "naked" without my robe. I figure if Vader can wear all of those layers at troops (in black!!), I can too. We laugh about a troop from July 2008 we call the "Tatooine troop".... lined up in a parking lot for a parade and the Jedi all had our hoods up for "shade".
Stay warm and feel better,
Karyn |

it is all re-cut
and I am working on it now...

This is it so far...
The color is NOT what I wanted and to me looks slightly purple...
So...
when I finish it up....
I think I will have to re-dye...
which should at least be easier because it will be a much smaller "batch"...
I had several other "issues"...
but I am ready to put the neckband on...
and finish up the arm holes....and hem it....
The short sleeved undertunic is done - except for the graphic...
The obi is about done...
and I have the tabards cut...
so...
it should not be too much longer....and I should be done... _________________

Done...
look how different the color renders with no flash..
The only thing I plan to add to this costume is a Jedi insignia on the short sleeved undertunic...on the sleeve itself...
...
I just haven't figured out how large....
whether to put it up at the bicep...
or down near the hem of the sleeve...
and which one...
this one:
or this one..
