Thanks to Crix (a trade carpenter) - R2's 3 legged arrangement is now even and my Astromech is no longer doing the "lean" like his owner.

I promised R2 he could have his own blog to document his return to action..

Yes R2...I am hurrying.....

So....R2 will be plugging his little utility arm into my computer from time to time to document the progress I am making in putting him back together again.....

R2....
a little patience please...

What? Are you calling me a mindless philosopher?

Sigh...

Well...R2 can take over from here.....

Greetings...
I am R2-D2....Astromech droid in the possession of Schph Gochi. I am one of the official Droids of Nar Shaddaa Base's Renegade Squad of RFTs...the other is R2-S5......

and hope to soon be working with Outlaw Squadron.

There have been 4 important sentients in my life so far.

The Maker: Kevin Sgoglund

The RE-Maker: Schph Gochi

The Master Builder: Darryl Sorensen

The Savior: Crix Turner

I was built by Kevin Skoglund strictly for use in a parade...you know...
to look good at 20 feet away. When the parade was over, the maker decided to sell me. A droids life is never easy.

Knowing that Schph Gochi always wanted an R2 unit since 1977, the maker offered me for sale to her. Nice old lady...but a little dippy at times.

At any rate, my ownership was transferred at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in October of 2007.

I went to work immediatly..

Gochi decided that I needed some serious upgrading and I was disassembled and sent for a few months to the workshop of Darryl Sorensen...Master Builder and owner of R2-S5. S5 and I became best buds...

Here is a shot of me and S5 a year later at MSABC 2008...

I was envious of S5's 3 leg stance....but...
I digress...

I got shipped off to the Master Builder for serious improvements to my dome...

When I was returned to Schph Gochi ....
she began to add things like blinking logic displays, psi flashers, voice, moveable utility arms (rather than my originals which were just painted on), and a wide variety of more accurate pieces.

I worked steadily over the next year as progress continued.

I rode the float in the Bartlett Parade 2008 - those Jawas did make me nervous...

Supervised the games at Camp Quality..

I did, however, get hauled off the field for making a bad call during the Target Shoot...

When we got back from Camp Quality....one of the Tie Pilots stole my head and tried to get into the droid union..

Well...
That's it for today....the "Remaker" wants her computer back...
and then she needs to get back to work on my feet...

Ok Gochi...
The computer is yours again.

Gee...
thanks R2...
I will let you get on tomorrow again....so you can continue your story...
we don't want to bore all of these lovely people all at once.

Telling R2's story is a way for me to "Stay on Target" and try to get him done....

Good morning Savior...
I am glad you found my blog...
And to all other sentients that might be reading...make sure to stop in to say hi....it gets lonely around here as the Remaker is not here much.

The Remaker is in the basement....my sensors are picking up the formula for paint...so there must be painting going on down there....always a good thing....paint means there are more parts going back on rather than coming off....
I am, however, without legs this morning...fortunately, my body is close enough to the computer to reach with my utility arm....
lol...(I believe that is what you sentients use as a giggle) she thinks I need her to get on this dinosaur of a computer....
wrong...
I can access myself...thank you very much.

By the way Savior -
the re-maker was babbling something about a 3rd dome that she has that she wants to give you...with a little fiberglassing...it can serve as a dome for any R2 you would like to make...also something about a 1" thick tutorial on making legs from plywood....dunno....you will have to talk to her about that....she makes no sense at times.

Anyway...back to my story of steady work throughout 2008...and the start of my untimely demise...

I was a hit at the Joliet Back to School Fair.....the place was packed! I really enjoyed this one as I got to ride to the gym on the back of a golf cart while the Remaker ran along behind making sure I didn't fall off....lol...she is a little old to be running for 2 blocks behind a golf cart..

the security guards were having a blast with the Remakers lightsabers behind me...though quite a few times I thought I would get my dome lopped off...

I went to ChiTag last year and met a new friend...
I think she was someone high up in the area of making sure the sentients were behaving nicely.

I attended the Clone Wars Premier....
it was a little scarry to be this close to Vader again.....like the Jawas...
he makes me nervous...

I was the "Star" attraction for the Mokena Public Library at Halloween Hollow display at the Mokena Park District...that is the Remaker standing to the left in the photo...hiding out under her Stormtrooper disguise. This was the first time she left me behind to enjoy myself for a few hours while she went home to get ready for something else..but hey...I know how to take care of myself.

I went to the "Inter Fan Jam" and kept a close eye on all of the items at our table..

I met another new friend there..

I really worked hard at the Toy Drive in Indiana ....
I met lots of new friends there..

This friend was particularly interested in my inner workings...

However...Boba Fett was also there...I had to defend myself with Gochi's lightsaber...

I met thousands of new friends at Ravinia...
I was a big hit with the ladies...

These two tried to be just like me...

2 members of Renegade Squad had to offer me protection

EVERYONE wanted their photo with me....it got so bad trying to get back to our Base of operations that one of the other sentients had to hold the crowd back so I could move more than a couple feet every 10 minutes...

I rode the float again in the Sycamore Halloween Parade...they had this "stuff" all over me...I am still picking some of that out of my innards..

I went to the Toys R Us Midnight Madness event...it was a good time to show off my lights...

I had a great time hanging out with the store employees...but that Vader guy was back again with his heavy breathing...

All in all...
I was having a great time hanging out with everyone...and going places...

Till this..
when the Remaker decided to grant my wish of the 3 leg arrangement..

I will save the rest of this story for later...

R2 here again...to continue my "saga"...

The addition of the center leg ended up to be more of a problem than the Remaker ever bargained for. What should have been a project confined to that center leg only ended up trickling down to all of my legs as it was discovered by the Master Builder that the original Maker had made a crucial error in the assembly of my outer legs.

Everything on my lower legs including the battery boxes, ankles....well...everything had to be removed and the removal process was not pretty, most things broke. I know the Remaker was really worried about how certain pieces were made and if she had the ability to remake them at all.

Then there was the disconcerting problem that I was no longer even....I leaned. In addition to leaning, the 3 leg configuration is not stable on me as I have no shoulder hubs (like the remote control R2's have) so my legs kick out from under me. A very serious problem as the Remaker says that if I crash and my dome comes off and breaks....she is ...as she puts it "screwed".

With so many problems to deal with, and after numerous failed attempts to at least put me standing straight, the Remaker put me to the side and I have been in a state of disarray since.

Enter the Savior...while the Remaker was busy with what she calls her "sewing machine"....
weapon of mass destruction if you ask me...
and making all sorts of weird orange things....
the Savior was busy making me straight again...
I can't thank him enough.
Just getting me up straight and offering the Remaker some ideas on how to stablize my outer legs was enough to get her off her sorry butt and tackle all of the other problems....
one by one...

There seemed to be a flurry of activity on me yesterday as the Remaker was up and down from the workshop...tools and pieces came flying out all over the place...fastners, adhesives and paint were everywhere. But the Remaker would also disappear out of the front portal from time to time and I heard machinery out there...
and more swearing.

There seems to be a LOT of swearing around here....kind of like living with the Hutts.

At any rate....I do see progress...

Here is what my left leg looked like on Friday night:

here is a part of it last night:

I have to watch from this position on the floor while work also is needed on the center leg and foot:

Just a small bit of the pieces needing to go on:

Each piece usually takes hours to prep for fit and finish....

Sometimes I think the Remaker is just scared to begin projects.
I know it took weeks for her to gather the courage to give me real movable front utility arms...

They turned out ok...

Then there was the weeks of sweating out adding the logic displays...
here is a link to the movie of those end results...

http://s201.photobucket.com/albums/aa304/schphgochi/R2-D2/?action=view&current=100_4482.flv

I also know there was a LOT of swearing as the Remaker gave me a voice...
which can be heard here:

http://s201.photobucket.com/albums/aa304/schphgochi/R2-D2/?action=view&current=100_4276.flv

Well...
I have to disconnect from this data port...
as I see that the 3 ring circus is again in motion as tools, adhesives, and more swearing has been going on for a couple hours already this morning..
gotta see what the old girl is up to...

WOW...
I am pretty excited today...
The Remaker is really making good on her promise to get me back into service...
How does my left leg look?

It feels good as new, and in some respects, even better.

The Remaker has not put my battery box back on the left leg and one other trim item, but she says that she will complete those items after the right leg is also rebuilt..

I am starting to look like my old self again...

I have to hand it to the Remaker....she was able to make a few things that I thought she would not be able to do...
amazing what one can do when one puts their mind to it...
well..
for sentients anyway...

R2 here again...

I am happy to report that Phase II of my return to service is done.

The Remaker has been spending obscene amounts of time at all hours of the day an night to finish this project. Quite honestly, I don't understand it. I mean, I sat for 10 months doing nothing but hanging around with pieces all over the place and all of a sudden....bam....
everything for Phase II has been completed.

I feel whole again...and ready to be stabilized.

Some painting of "out of the way places" still needs to be done...
and then there are the ankle cylinders for the center leg that are in primer.....though....as I have heard...there might be some clearance issues with that due to the fact that the Remaker has made my center leg moveable at the ankle....not ridgid....so as to aborb shock better.

I feel whole again....

Thank you savior...

Actually...
I have been feeling so good that I decided to help the Remaker with what she called "Christmas lights"...

I asked her about this rather odd looking article of clothing...

I was quickly informed that it was her original Christmas stocking that was produced for her first Christmas in 1951...
I did the calculations and noted that the item was most certainly an antique...
somehow or another...
this didn't seem to please her..

I dove right in and starting checking the lights...
but found that I made them a tangled mess....
I guess utility arms are not good for working with these lights...

Phyllis (& R2!) that's awesome! I'm so excited to see more improvements to your little guy! If it helps you stay on target, you can browse my R2's blog: http://arteedootoo.blogspot.com/ I'm sure you already saw it, but just in case. Smile I haven't posted anything new on there in a while...my kids' blog and our "new" house's blog have been taking up most of my time lately. Smile

Greetings Rachel...
R2 here...

I will go and re-visit your droids blog...
and thank you for visiting mine...

Hopefully, someday soon....your Astromech and I will be able to "hang out".

I remember your name as the sentient who advised the Remaker to get an amphlifier so that everyone could hear me when I speak....
it worked out well...
and I can now scream above the crowds...

However, the Remaker is still having difficulty with her MP3 Player...
I hear lots more Huttese when she tries to use that thing...
she says that the buttons are way too small....and the only way she can read the instructions in the teeny tiny booklet is with not only her glasses on...but also a magifying glass...something she generally does not include in the pockets of her costume...
er..
uniform..

Thank-you R2. Smile Tell the Remaker if she would like me to try reading the instructions, bring it to the Star Wars in Concert event and I'll do my best. Every R2 should have his voice. Wink

Thank you for stoping by Tusken Emperor....
I love to have friends visit and share my stories with...

and...
Rachel...
sadly the Remaker informs me I will not be going to the big "Star Wars In Concert" this coming Sunday...

With what she calls "family in from out of town"...
(I am assuming that "family" means Droids from the same production run)
that she will not have time to pester the Savior to stop by for the stabilization of my outer legs this weekend....and next weekend is also very busy for the Remaker...
something about a volunteer prairie restoration project on Saturday and then the concert is Sunday...

I am in pieces again this morning as the Remaker has that touch up painting to do in my "out of the way" places.

I understand that my innards are finally going to get a nice coating of white...
all the better to see down in there and for me to look a little more "finished" when she removes my dome to light me up...
