I'm am really only refering to events where a droid builder is specifically invited to attend a RL event. For example I was asked to bring my droid to the Cubs Scouts dinner back in February. This was an event that I would never have attended as an R2 builder if I was not asked to attend by the RL. However, for other events such as Steel City Con, Screaming Tiki, or Dragon Con where the R2 builders attend the events as an independent group then we can do as we please.

I agree that R2 building is not a costuming sub group...that is unless you can fit yourself inside a life sized one and walk around like Kenny Baker LOL.

I am always willing to help out the 501st and rebel legion and they have always been very good to us, but us droid builders do have our own Yahoo group and Astromech.net. Then there are smaller local groups that are part of the world builders group like, R2-Central here in Nebraska, Bay area builders, R2LA, DC builders, etc.

Seeing R2 get inducted as an official Rebel legion member would be cool though.

For costumes like C-3po, Guri, 4-LOM I can see.

Our three organizations do a lot of good things together and I look forward to doing more Smile

I have always believed that R2 especially IS a character and therefore should be a RL member with his handler...
but...

ONLY if the handler would like to be a full member. There are some builders who want to be a full member with their droid and some that would rather not...and that is fine.

Anytime you can get one of the R2 Builders to an event (and we have had the honor of that around here many times) it is just plain AWESOME ....regardless of what the handler is wearing. Darryl Sorensen has several costumes that he wears when out with his Droid...he is a full member here at the RL and at the 501st.....because he chooses to ....

I would never want to force the Builders to do anything that they don't want...and I support them in any manner that they choose to participate...as long as they come...and have fun.

One thing I did do was to create a Yahoo Group for the Tech costume.
It has all the tutorials for the pieces of the costume as well as where to get the bucket.

Note that Yavin Tech coveralls can be either gray or tan...
the tutorials show my tan version, but I have just completed the gray version...

Anyway...
anyone interested in doing the Tech costume can go here:

http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/yavinhangar/

You do have to join the group to see the tutorials and all the information...

Me and my R2...with me in the tan version

again...
just for those who WANT to...
not somethine I would want to force on anyone...

In answer to Jay's question, Costumbase has the gray AT-AT driver suit, but it doesn't have the lower leg pockets, which you need with the Tech costume because the legs aren't tucked into the boots. You can't get away with not having the lower pockets like with the X-Wing suit because those legs are tucked into the boots.

Lori is right....

For my gray version I did start with the Costumebase AT-AT suit...
It is the same jumpsuit/flightsuit that appears to have been used for the Hoth Hangar Trooper and Tech.....

I have put the lower pockets on my Costumebase by cutting apart a second Costumebase jumpsuit....
Even though it was more expensive to buy two...
I felt I could justify it because it could be used in 3 costumes:

Yavin Tech
Hoth Tech
Hoth Hangar Trooper

The tan version that is shown above started life as a white coverall...
it was dyed...along with a second coverall that was used to make all of the pockets for the arms and for the legs.

Hello everyone...
I have a full size remote R2 and I'm a member of the R2 builders. I have been watching these posts for a while and decided to add my 2 cents worth...

I don't really care if I ever become a FULL member of RL, I just want to do appearances with the costumers. I have been out with R2 at Scienceworks in Melbourne, Austalia since June basically every weekend... The people go crazy when R2 comes out and LOVE him. I have already been asked by the Melbourne RL guys to attend appearances with them and I'm more than happy to do them.

One of the main reasons I built R2 was for the kids!!!! To bring the excitment to them of seeing a real, live astromech droid is what it is about to me. I'm not interested in being fully fledged members of any group just for status. I just don't want to step on anyones toes or upset anyone by attending these appearances. 502st have also approached me and don't care if I'm a member or not...

As far as R2 goes, since he is built from the R2 builders plans, parts and the group, he is 99% screen accurate and once I'm 100% happy with him, I will be going for Lucasfilm lincencing.

So, if anyone wants R2 to attend appearnces in Melbourne I'm more than happy to bring him along... As far as wearing a costume goes, I agree that the operator should be in the background... That's why I have costumers as the wranglers and I try to stay away to keep the reality alive... If this post seems harsh or arrogant, I'm sorry but I wanted you guys to know where I stand on this whole "droid membership" topic...

Look forward to getting to know you all and working with you!!!

Cheers, Jason...
