Smile Thanks for the welcome. I built my pre-senate kimono for this year's Gencon Indy costume competition. I've got a few tweaks I'd like to make. I want to stitch the layers of the kimono together so that they don't shift like they do in the pictures below. In theory (and on the form) they look like they do in the movie. But the blue layer kept sliding out. I also want to add more pearls to the headpiece.

Here are some pictures:

You did a wonderful job on the Obi fabrication, did you do that custom?

I found a loose-weave upholstery fabric with a good base color. Then I embroidered the pattern into the fabric with a silver 1/16" ribbon. After the embroidery was done, I used silver leafing fluid to leaf the ribbon to give it a bit more shine.

I did several different tests before I chose my final path.

The left is the original from the real Amidala costume. The second to the left is 1/8" ribbon embroidery with silver and gold leafing. The 1/8" ribbon ended up being too wide, and the gold leaf was unnecessary. The second to the right was an attempt at the pattern with no embroidery, just leaf. This had the best color, but didn't mimic the texture. The farthest to the right was just the 1/8" silver ribbon.

So I refined and embroidered with 1/16" ribbon. The ribbon gave me a good texture, and the leaf gave me good color. Below, the left side is embroidered and leafed in gold, and the right is just embroidered.

Here's a close up of the embroidery pattern.

Obi fabric option for the Ep. I gown:

might be a little too light in color, but the diamond pattern is nice and would otherwise work well.
