We have received details from the Smithsonian about the segments that they would like us to contribute to Air & Scare at Home. The webpage for the event is now up, which gives more details about the overall event: https://airandspace.si.edu/visit/events/air-scare-home.

First, the Smithsonian would like us to give them clips to make a 5 minute or less video of characters giving their favorite recipes for blue milk. We have a very short time frame on this one, and will need to shoot the clips this weekend. The Museum plans to show this in mid-October, and they need time to edit. I have developed the recipes and a script for this segment. It only needs a few face characters, and I will be getting in touch with possible participants tomorrow.

The second group of segments will have room for a lot more people to participate. The Smithsonian would like us to submit videos of costumers transforming into their characters. We can submit clips to make 2-4 videos which are about 3-4 minutes long each. There are two types of videos that we can submit, and costumers from 501st, Rebel Legion, Mando Mercs and R2-D2 Builders can send in submissions.

First, we will be doing a pass the pumpkin video, similar to a pass the lightsaber video:

1. An initial shot will show the costumer or droid handler (perhaps with a controller) in civilian attire, then they are handed a pumpkin from offscreen to the right;

2. Move the pumpkin to the center so it fills the screen to block their image and stop the recording;

3. Get into costume, and shoot the second piece of the video with the pumpkin in the same position where it ended, then move it away to the left reveal the person in costume or the droid;

4. Pass the pumpkin offscreen to the left. For droids, you can get creative with passing the pumpkin- it can be on top of their head, on any tray or arm they may have, or have a human assistant as the droid’s features allow.

5. The pumpkin can be a plain pumpkin, a carved pumpkin, a foam pumpkin, a ceramic pumpkin- feel free to get creative, as long as it is appropriate for children to view and is big enough to block the shot when needed.

Second, the Smithsonian was interested in time lapse videos of people getting into costume. Note that there are some strict guidelines here:

1. The costumer must start out with at least a body suit or underarmor on- no one should be in their underwear.
2. Please limit to this to costumes that don’t have awkward moments in application- for example, needing to fasten a codpiece strap.
3. The time lapse should be set to 6x, so each minute in real time is a second of footage.
4. Any individual time lapse video can’t be longer than three minutes, and shorter is better, so we can include more people.
5. If you submit one of these, please also submit a pass the pumpkin video- I’m not sure how this one will go and I’d like to have the other one as a backup.

Whichever option you choose, please note the following things:

1. Bring your A-game: submit your strongest costume. Approved costumes only, please.
2. We can only use a limited number of repeats of the same costume- a video full of TKs would not be as interesting as one with a variety of characters, so choose your most unusual character.
3. If we have too many submissions of the same costume type, we will select the ones with the best video quality.
4. It is likely that we won’t be able to use all of the submissions- the planning group and the Smithsonian will each have the opportunity to review and edit the clips.
5. Submissions are limited to one costume per member per club, with a maximum of two costumes per person. (So if you are in two or more clubs, you can submit two costumes).
6. The tentative submission deadline is midnight on Saturday, October 17, so we will be able sort through and submit the videos to the Smithsonian on Sunday 10/18, which would give the Smithsonian two work weeks to edit before Halloween. The deadline will be subject to change if we receive a tighter time frame from the Smithsonian, or we may need to cut it off early if we get overwhelmed with submissions.

If you would like to submit a clip, please complete the sign-up sheet linked below:

Please PM Lori Frye if you have any issues with the form.

Once you sign up, we will send you an instruction sheet with the technical details for the video type you are doing. Please wait to start recording until you receive the technical details.

Please contact Lori Frye or Deb Benigni if you have any questions.
