This is a costume breakdown as well as reference resource and a discussion thread for a costume for a new costume for The Rise of Skywalker. This costume in and of itself is a spoiler. If you have not seen the film, Be warned.

Ben Solo - Exegol costume

For the end of TROS, Kylo is no more, and Ben Solo is born again. To emphasize this arc, he strips away the trappings of Kylo, particularly his regal supreme leader Tunic, Cape, Layered sleeves, and gloves. This leaves his Boots, pants, as well as a new costume item for this, an under tunic.

Below is a breakdown of the items, with a focus on the new tunic, as it is the only new piece not shared with his Kylo ensemble.

The Tunic

Ben's tunic is designed like a thermal undershirt. It is made of a black crinkle gauze fabric. The shirt features several distinct features: A boat neck neckline, a dropped shoulder seam, and a mostly flat layout, with no yoke, taper seams, or visible hems. It also has damage in the form of a small hole on the front right abdomen from where he was stabbed. There is an additional hole on the right shoulder top, but only in the last scene after he climbs out of the pit.

This image from the front shows the basic shape, although not in great lighting. I've highlighted the edges and seam lines to give a better idea of the overall construction of the tunic:

Here is an image from the side. This better shows the sleeve attachment. It also displays the additional shoulder damage on the tunic from after he climbs from the pit. The highlighted shows all the edges and seams, as well as outlines the damage on the shoulder.

This image shows the drop shoulder when Adam's arm is fully relaxed. This gives an idea of how far down the drop shoulder is. A good way to think of this is like a standard Jedi Tunic without the undertuck.

This images shows how full the sleeve is. It's not tight, but not really baggy. It rumples but doesn't fall over the hand, this is most likely due to a more rigid lining underneath.

The neckline is called a "Boat Neck" This is a type of neckline that has slight dip in the front and back that is symmetrically dropped on both sides. This results in sort of Tear Drop top shape on both shoulders on either side of the neck hole. These images help illustrate the shape and fullness of the neckline.

Lastly, the tunic has no visible hems. At least not on the neckline or sleeve. This is most likely due to a recessed lining. The lining is likely silk, but we have no evidence of that. These images show the neckline and sleeve end. Take not of how they turn over and hold that shape, but don't have any top stitching or end.

As an additional note, the Tunic also appears to have splits in the side from about the small of the hip down to the ends. This is most likely for movement, and is common in tunics of this type. I do not at this time have a proper image of this, but attempted to illustrate it in the highlighting in the first set of images. I will amend this topic if and when further reference becomes available.

The screen used fabric appears to be a cotton double gauze. Some reports have indicated it is this exact fabric from Mood: FABRIC
This fabric will need to be prewashed in hot water in order to get the correct texture.

The Pants

The pants are the same pants from Kylo. We don't have good reference at this time for these scenes of the pants, however we do know the details of the Kylo pants, as they have not changed over the course of the 3 films.

The Kylo pants are made of a black denim with a slight sheen (mildly shiny) and darts above and below the knees. Additionally, there is a felled seam behind the knees. The pants are of a regular fit, and tuck into the boots. The pants in previous films have been held up by suspenders, though as we know from the shirtless scene in TLJ, the suspenders are not there canonicaly.

The Boots

The boots are also believed to be his Kylo boots. These are black leather high calf boots, with vertical ribbing on the front, pleated detailing on the side, a flat even sole, and 4 straps, 2 around the calf top, and 2 around the ankle. The straps are secured with black metal slide adjusters. The opening in previous films has been a zipper on the rear of the boot.

The Lightsaber

When fighting the Knights of Ren, Ben at one point uses a lightsaber. This is the reforged graflex that Rey uses through most of the film.

This isn't the most complicated costume, and all the pieces are fairly straight forward. The tunic is the only new item, but definitely has some tricks to it. The costume team shouldn't have much trouble with generating the standard, but due to the darkness of the scenes it's worn in, it may take some time to get good enough reference to be confident in those details.

Please feel free to comment or ask any questions. I will amend this post with any new discoveries or reference materials as they become available.
