I've been eyeing this costume for the better part of 2019. I finally decided to tackle it so I can have it ready for Celebration. I looked over the threads posted and came up with a battle plan. Thank you to all the ladies who posted before me. Your information was very helpful.
My goal is to keep this under $300 and I think it is possible. Fingers crossed.
I purchased this fabric as I liked both the color and the price. I figured 10 yards would be more than enough for the pants, top and belt.
https://www.fabric.com/buy/0462788/telio-misora-crepe-de-chine-rust
I then purchased 3 spools(?) of this trim.
http://www.kreinik.com/shops/Heavy-32-Braid-5m.html
For the pants, I plan on using Simplicity S9051. I will simply remove the slit at the bottom and add the cuff. I like that it has an elastic waistband. While I could use a zipper, I would rather not.
For the tunic, I plan on using Simplicity S9046. I'll be using View A as the base and simply remove the overlay. The length, neckline and sleeves are all pretty much exactly what I need so it was a lucky find.
I already had a pair of ballet flats in my stash which I never wear anymore so I plan on dyeing them the correct color. Just need to purchase the dye but I won't do that till the fabric is in my possession and I can see what color is needed.
I'm waiting a bit before purchasing the Spoonflower fabric but since I am tall, I know I will need the bigger print. I will be getting it on crepe de chine but am hopeful there is a sale of some sort soon because $23/yard is not fun when you're on a budget.
Hoping to make a mock up of the pants and top this week during the holiday break but we'll see. I am excited to get this started. _________________ Community Member of the Year 2019

Welp thanks to Christmas, I had some spare cash and was able to purchase the Spoonflower fabric MUCH faster than I had thought. I ordered 3 yards of the regular length. I was worried I might have to order the "tall" as I am 5'8" but after speaking with a few others who have the fabric, it was decided the "regular" would be the way to go.
With a 10% discount code and $3 shipping, my total came to $71.78 after tax.
I also was able to pick up the chiffon lining needed for the cape at Michael Levine's this past weekend and after their sale, I had 4 yards for $10.
Thanks to coupons etc. my total cost so far for the costume is $164.01 which is WELL below my budget for this costume. I am so happy! Now I just need to wait for the Spoonflower to arrive to begin draping it to get the look needed.
I lucked out on the patterns and discovered that a pattern I had picked up awhile ago can also be used for the pants. I'll be using it instead since I didn't want to wait for the patterns I previously listed to go on sale.
The top I intend to use McCalls M7432 instead as this was also in my stash thankfully.
View C seems to be closest to what I need with a few modifications.
I'll be mocking up the top and pants probably tomorrow and will post results when I'm done. _________________ Community Member of the Year 2019

Oof the holidays and their shipping times cancelled my plans to have my mockups done but that's okay. I was finishing up my Episode 9 Rey and getting it approved as well as working on a few other costumes so time wasn't wasted.
In any case, small update is better than none. I received the fabric.com fabric and found it to be super red. It was almost a tomato red and that would not do so I returned it. I was able to find this at my local JoAnn's instead and I really like it. It was $4.99/yard (with coupons) which was still definitely in the budget, especially once I got the refund on the fabric so it was fine. Best part is that it matches the shoes I ordered perfectly!
Here is the fabric in the sun:
and here it is in store lighting:
My Spoonflower fabric also arrived so I am set to begin. I plan on working on the pants/top and belt this coming week but since I started a new job, not sure if that will happen. Guess I'll play it by ear. Hoping to complete this before February though so fingers crossed. _________________ Community Member of the Year 2019

Annnnnnd the trim arrived this morning and now I have everything I need to begin. Once I get through my current load of commissions that is.
Here are all the fabric purchases I made as well as the shoes purchased at Kohl's.
In addition, I had these patterns and have decided to use them instead.
The pants need no modifications and the shirt I am going to use will be View B. It has the side slits, is the proper length and the boatneck neckline. Only change will be the sleeve area by the wrist.
I had a question for people who have made this already. In this photo, you can clearly see the jacket has a yoke.
No mention of yoke is made in the standard and I have seen and heard many people have just sewn it to the collar piece. Is one way better than the other? The yoke added actually makes it easier in my opinion. It was my intention to use the same jacket pattern I used for my SW Adventures Padme costume for this and then modify but curious as to others thoughts.
In any case, I don't see any work happening on this until at least Sunday but you never know. _________________ Community Member of the Year 2019

I'd make the yoke. It's honestly the easiest way to do this and explains why it was done in the movie.
Best of luck with this; looks like you're all set for this to happen. _________________

Ooof between Covid and school, I got super sidetracked on this. I'm finally back at it. I am simultaneously making this for myself and a friend so some things in the mockup are for her and not for me as I am going for approval and she is not.
Here is my mockup of the blouse. I used the pattern I posted about before for this. I'm tall so I had to lengthen the pattern to 37 inches ( adding 8 inches in length) to make it hit just above my knee. This looks pretty close to me actually. Thoughts? It hasn't been hemmed yet obviously.
Side with no bent knee
Side with bent knee
I'm going to angle the sleeve a bit more at the knuckles but other than that, I think this is good to go everywhere else.
Here is the tunic with the pants. The mockup pants are made of a knit fabric I had in my stash and are currently closed at the ankles with elastic (what my friend wanted). I know i need to make mine straight cuffs. The length fits perfectly and the waistband is elastic so easy to slip on and off. Are they too baggy or good as is?
I hadn't tackled the belt yet but added a quick piece of scrap fabric to pull in the tunic and I think it looks good. Anything that is glaringly obvious that I need to change on these mockups? Other than the cuff adjustment and the sleeve fix?
Hoping to tackle the belt tonight after dinner. _________________ Community Member of the Year 2019

Welp...I ended up working on this tonight but not on the belt as I had planned. I ended up patterning out the lining piece and then making it with my chiffon. I'm pretty pleased with it. My only thought is it may need to be about 1/2 inch shorter? It's the lining so I think it will be okay? I took a photo of the lining as is, then with my pant leg rolled up so you can see where it hits me ankle wise. Thoughts on the length? Good news is that if this is too short, I can give it to my friend for her costume instead so the work won't be wasted.
I made sure to have the yolk that is shown on Carrie's on mine. I took Butterick B5473 an redrew it on wrapping paper and extended the length. The current lining is 55" long. For reference, I am 5'8" so I feel it's long enough, but again, can make longer if needed.
Hoping to tackle both the yolk and the belt tomorrow. _________________ Community Member of the Year 2019

Slight progress yesterday but not nearly as much as I would have liked. I patterned out the belt. For reference, the belt is 3 inches wide around and at the edges of the diamonds it is 6 inches at the highest point.
I threw on my paper pattern for a quick check on sizing. Seems pretty good to me. I need to adjust the diamond slightly as I cut one piece slightly more angled than the other so it's off by a centimetre or so but not bad.
Try on in normal clothes.
Try on with lining for top.
It's currently just loosely pinned as it is paper but overall I like it. Hope to work on the yoke today and pattern that mockup out this evening but we'll see. _________________ Community Member of the Year 2019

The pants might be a tad bit baggy, but I am no expert the pants I did are much more straight legged and then slightly gathered at the cuff. It looks like your original pattern might have too wide of legs.
The tunic looks good.
I assume that lining is for the cape? It should be the same size as and pleated with the main fabric. It should be slightly shorter.
The diamond for the belt looks a bit too small in proportion. The one I did isn't a true diamond, I elongated and smoothed out the transition from the diamond to the belt.

Your mock ups looks pretty good, but there are a few points I think you should look at.
As you said the sleeves need a more distinct point over the hand. And it seems very tight over your chest so I'd recommend giving yourself a bit of fabric there; right now it is being pulled taut and Leia's fit is a bit looser. Length of the tunic looks good to me right now though.
I also think the pants looks too baggy; loose fit, but maybe more straight up and down? Though the knit could also be affecting how the pants read.
And yes, you need to upscale your belt/diamond. You are clearly much taller than Carrie so for it to look proportional to you it should also be taller/wider overall.
Cloak length looks pretty good, too. I think I might have gone for another centimeter or two, but probably nothing that will be an issue. _________________

Yes, it is the lining and it has a yoke. In the BTS photo of Carrie, you clearly see a yoke so I added one. _________________ Community Member of the Year 2019

This mockup was made to my friend's measurements and not mine so will definitely be giving it a bit more room when I make it for me. Agreed on the pants. I'll take them in a bit on the next mockup. _________________ Community Member of the Year 2019

Yes, it is the lining and it has a yoke. In the BTS photo of Carrie, you clearly see a yoke so I added one. |
I interpreted that as the lining of the actual yoke, not a separate one.
I plan on hand sewing the cape to the yoke. This is a rough doodle of my plan.
My main concern with your picture is that it doesn't look as full as the cape is - it needs to be the same size and pleated with it. |
