Definitely agree with the point about what kind of silk that was: it is definitely more like a crepe that a chiffon. One could possibly argue for georgette, but crepe seems like a good general term which covers the range of silk that would be appropriate. Of course, that is an optional detail anyway, so a matte silk jersey would also probably pass just fine as written.

In regards to ESB v. ANH differences, correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't all of those differences written to optional? So, as long as one has a dress and belt that meet the basic requirements, you could get approved as either with applicable hair.

What I want to clarify is if, for example, my current costume would be approved, based on the revised standard. I have a Jetset poly dress, like most do (not sure if that counts as a ANH lookalike, or ESB fabric), it's ankle length (ANH) with sleeves starting partway between waist and armpit (ESB). My belt is white leather, with top stitched edges (ANH) and plates that do not go all the way to the edge of the belt (ESB) and an extra plate covering the rear closure (ANH). Hair would be the ANH style, though would want to do the ESB variant hair style at times. Boots are to standard (no differences).

Does that meet the standards for approval? Or do I have to completely redo my elements so that every portion is ANH or ESB?

Because almost all of those details outside of the hair are barely discernible to the public, and quite frankly, to most members who don't have this costume. None of those details is a glaring, obvious error if worn with a detail from the other version.

If it's OK to "mix and match" , then we need to make sure that's clearly stated to avoid confusion. And, make sure we point people to correct references (for example: the belt tutorial out there now that most use wouldn't be accurate if you're going to make it all ANH or all ESB - it mixes elements)

If it's not ok - then that's a big concern to me because it seems to be going way overboard on accuracy when it's not needed or wanted. Yes we want to be as accurate as possible, but we also need to consider the big picture. From more than 3 feet away no one but a very trained critical eye would be able to tell the difference between belts, for example. That's not going to ruin a costume.

I'm hoping my fears are unwarranted!

First off, great catch on the silk wording. I think you are right that crepe is the better word.

As to the ANH vs. ESB tags, I think the intention of the earlier folks in this thread was to make it clear which was which, if you really wanted to go one way or the other, but allow you to mix and match details (except for the hairstyle). In the past, that is how the costume has been approved.

This combined standard was just an attempt to streamline two very similar costumes into one standard.

Would it be helpful to put all of the ANH vs. ESB differences in the optional part of each standard point? Is a statement at the beginning helpful that, except for the hair, ESB and ANH details can be mixed and matched?

I personally like idea of a statement that details can be mixed and matched!

Thanks Jenna for the quick response and clarification! Your answer is what I hoped was the case but wanted to be sure Smile I agree that simply adding a statement like what you said would be perfect. Also, perhaps in each section saying, for example: "Belt should have 7 plates spaced evenly, either with an 8th plate covering the closure (ESB) or without (ANH). Belt may have topstitching at edges (ANH style), and plates may touch the edges of belt (ANH) or be approx 1/4" from the edge (ESB)". Making it clear that either way for each item/detail is acceptable.

And - on the belt, mixing the ESB and ANH details, as has been done previously is still ok, correct? Just making sure Smile

Thank you!

Yes. We won't split hairs over whether you have a ESB dress with a AHN belt or vice versa. Smile

The smaller differences are only seen by those who really look, and we want to make it easier for those who want their costume to be all one style, but not limit it to either. Just pick a hairstyle (or get approved with both).

And it's good to get the fabric mistake caught; chiffon would be wholly wrong for this costume. As you said, way too translucent.

Here's another go at clarifying the ESB vs. ANH variation (and fixing the chiffon -> crepe issue)

These setbacks in her political career have been accompanied by more personal losses. (Source: Star Wars Databank)
