Aside from the fact that I have no idea how to describe the blasters, I finished adapting the ANH/ESB Leia costumes into the new format. I need some help finding the perfect reference images for this costume, though.

As far as weapon descriptions go, what about using the same wording as the one on the 501st Legion CRLs? (Can we do that?)

E-11 Blaster
Based on a real or replica Sterling sub-machine gun, scratch-built, or a modified commercial toy Stormtrooper blaster.

I like that. That's a nice, clear description.

Hello Smile

I also thought about to describe the blaster, but i found out it is not needed.

The people doing the costumes with these weapons know them. I use the following wording - makes things much more easier and is also very clear.

Blaster:
Required Details:
    - Accurate DL-44 Blaster

in your case:

Blaster:
Required Details:
    - Accurate E-11 Blaster

One thing I'd like to point out with finding images for this costume is that the dress on display that most people use as reference does not seem to be the one from ANH. It does not drape the same way at the waist and sleeves, and the collar is much thinner. Which is more like the version she wore at the end of ESB. I'm not sure how different and specific we want to go on those two, since they're supposed to be the same dress. I just remember reading somewhere that they made a new one for ESB because they didn't have the original.

I agree - and we should be able to dig up screen captures from the film.

I do also think there should be mention of no topstitching on the hood, sleeves, or hem.

The exhibition dress is always the ESB dress; you are correct that they didn't have the original, so they made a new one for Empire.
The two are similar, but not the same. Neither are the belts.
Usually we have made it a range where a dress should fall within what is seen in either set of dresses/references, and I think we want to stick with that. That means the standard will need to be written to reflect both costumes (silk and poly), different belt widths and front curves and so on.

I think we'd like to have side by side references of both dresses for each point so people can choose for themselves which style they prefer to go with.
We should be able to get a lot of screen references for ANH, but have few for ESB.

Based on everyone's suggestions, I went through and noted the places where the standards would differ between the ANH and ESB costumes, and labeled each reference photo by which movie it came from, so that people can make informed decisions. How does this look?

Character Description
Princess Leia Organa was one of the Rebel Alliance’s greatest leaders, fearless on the battlefield and dedicated to ending the tyranny of the Empire. Daughter of Padmι Amidala and Anakin Skywalker, sister of Luke Skywalker, and with a soft spot for scoundrels, Leia ranks among the galaxy’s great heroes. But life under the New Republic has not been easy for Leia. Sidelined by a new generation of political leaders, she struck out on her own to oppose the First Order as founder of the Resistance. These setbacks in her political career have been accompanied by more personal losses. (Source: Star Wars Databank)

I like noting the differences so people can easily choose which style to aim for in both text and references. Smile

Btw. under the 'Belt' one sentence has been chopped in half; I guess the other half didn't get copied over.
And maybe we should add in that the ESB belt is actually slightly wider than the ANH? ANH has the plates touching the edge, ESB has a bit of space over and under the plates.

Somewhere in there it should state that the hood should have a rolled hem.

Also, I think with it (hood) stating 'visible machine stitching', this could be misinterpreted as topstitching.

Hi All -- late to the discussion, but I have a couple of questions after reading the thread (as I'm about to submit my Senatorial Leia for approval).

1. The fabric for ANH style -- I know the original fabric is thought to be the Quiana fabric that's not available, and a thinner version than the ESB. The standard as proposed says "Silk Chiffon" -- but I feel like that's not the best way to describe it? Chiffon implies a translucent, see through fabric (at least to me) but I know that's not what we're looking for. Is "silk crepe" more what is being thought of? I would hate for there to be any confusion.

2. The ESB vs. ANH details -- So, we know that there are belt differences, length differences, etc. between the two movies. What isn't clear is how the pieces must be put together. Does it mean you must have all ANH specifications to wear it with the buns, and all ESB to wear it with the single bun? I ask because my costume that I've made has a dress that is the Jetset knit, and ankle length. But my belt has the slight spacing between the edge of the plates and the belt (like all tutorials/references have shown in the past) which is stated to be ESB; and I have an extra plate covering the closure, which is ANH. Does this mean I have to make a new belt, since I guess it's a hybrid of the two styles (which is how most have done it in the past)? Does this mean I have to overhaul my entire costume?

And if the answer is yes -- does this level of accuracy really matter for most prospective members? Does a 1/4 inch of leather showing on a belt make or break a costume? It is clearly recognizable as the classic Leia costume, and I feel like there are a lot of other elements that need to be strictly followed (like the dress construction) and are very important to the overall look, but will I not be approved or allowed to troop if I have mixed elements? I know we want to be as accurate as possible, and honor source material, but I worry that as it's written it's almost too specific, and that it would be very discouraging to new members/applicants.

Finally, will this be considered 1 costume, with optional elements to make it ANH or ESB? Or will it still be considered two different costumes, and must be submitted as such?

Forgive me if any of this comes off badly -- I'm just curious, and concerned.

Stay afraid, but do it anyway. What's important is the action. You don't have to wait to be confident. Just do it and eventually the confidence will follow. - Carrie Fisher
