|

|
I’m not sure where this should be posted I’ve already posted in a couple places and keep getting redirected around. I originally posted under Luke Skywalker costume standards but was told the Pilot detachment handles Luke’s Snowspeeder Costume standards. So I’m posting here for a revision request to Luke’s Snowspeeder Costume. My original post is below:
There is a 'standard' for Luke Skywalker Snowspeeder / X-Wing Pilot in ESB, however, I'd like to submit a revision. I'll post up both the original and the revision requested below with explanations and references.
Required Items:
1. Orange flight suit with altered collar
2. Orange flight jacket with rank insignia on LH pocket, puffy collar, zip front , hip level length, & ribbed sleeves.
3. Leg flares
4. Brown holster with octagonal buckle with leg strap around right leg.
5. Lightsaber D-ring hook on front of belt so lightsaber hangs down front of left leg & either 2 or 3 regular pouches.
6. White flak vest with ribbing
7. Grey chest box with grey hose OR aviation hose and appropriate decoration (buttons, pin stripes etc.)
8. X-Wing helmet with Luke’s decals
9. White/off white leather gloves with suede gauntlets and Comm Pad on left wrist
10. Leg pockets on coveralls
11. Gray suede boots with suede wraps around them and 3 white straps.
Revisions:
2. It is listed the Flight jacket has a zip front but it is a velcro closure on the front of the jacket. It is noted in Star Wars Costumes, The Original Trilogy book that the jacket has a Velcro front closure.
You can see at the top of the collar the Velcro.
6. Flax Vest, Luke's vest. It should be noted it is also worn backwards from the X-wing vest and there are two additions added on Luke's vest over the standard Snowspeeder Pilots vests.
First, There are 2 rivets/washers on each of the shoulder straps on the 3rd row of stitching up from the top of the vest.
Second, There are 2 metal hooks between the 1st and 2nd row of ribbing on the vest. These appear to be the same size metal hook used on the belt to hold the lightsaber. You can see the lightsaber hook here in comparison to the vest hooks.
And a standard Snowspeeder pilot without the extra vest details.
12. There should also be added that Luke is wearing the Off-white/Beige balaclava or cloth-covered soft helmet.
You can see Luke is wearing the cap in both these photos on Hoth sequences.
A side note the cap is absent when he is on Dagobah when he takes his helmet off when exiting the X-Wing after he's crashed.
Thanks,
Christina |

It looks that the hooks are attached by the ribbets and washers. It make sense that they aren't separete pieces... _________________ TXO - KJO - Templo Pucará 2013-13

Yeah it does, I compared my hook that's on my belt for the lightsaber and its looks like it would fit where the rivets are and where the hook is exposed. Good eye. I have two hooks in the mail so once they arrive I can lay them on the vest to compare. |

I think that you've got a good start here, definitely. And the standards have been in desperate need of updating. Just need some more detailed descriptions-- the more detail the better.
Gotta admit, I've wondered what's with that button snap thing that's below Luke's right shoulder in some shots. I don't think his suit always has it for some reason... Whatever that thing is... _________________ B-wing Pilot - Jedi - Resistance X-wing Pilot - Temmin "Snap" Wexley

Is that a rank badge, Alex? |

Yes, I think that is his blue commander rank badge. _________________ RIAD GRRRL-Squad-Leader 2019-present

Ah, that could be. It's just such a weird position for it, and a weird angle, too. And the thing in the left chest window pocket is also supposedly a rank badge... He's just double ranking! _________________ B-wing Pilot - Jedi - Resistance X-wing Pilot - Temmin "Snap" Wexley

Hi All,
I’m building this costume right now.
I’m certain that the hooks on Luke’s vest are lightsaber d-ring belt clips, as previously suggested.
Ref:
As for the soft cap, Christina, you mentioned: “A side note the cap is absent when he is on Dagobah when he takes his helmet off when exiting the X-Wing after he's crashed.”
I believe it’s also absent in Echo Base on Hoth just as Luke is about to don his helmet after climbing into the Snowspeeder. (Though we cut away before he actually puts the helmet on!)

Sorry for the bump.
Having just been denied submission for a Luke Skywalker (Snowspeeder/X-Wing) costume due to the wrong pleats on my jacket, I would like to point out this difference to anyone looking to build this costume in future and to request that the Costume Standard be revised to reflect the following:
Luke Skywalker’s jacket has KNIFE PLEATS down the sleeves, whereas the generic Snowspeeder pilot jackets have BOX PLEATS. I request a revision to point 2 of the standard to:
2. Orange flight jacket:
• hip level length
• puffy collar
• ribbed sleeves featuring knife pleats down both shoulders and arms starting at the collar and stopping approx. 7 inches above the wrist
• Velcro front closure
• rank insignia on LH pocket
Similarly, I request that point 2 of the Standard for Snowspeeder pilot (Episode V) be refined to:
2. Orange flight jacket:
• hip level length
• puffy collar
• ribbed sleeves featuring box pleats down both shoulders and arms starting at the collar and stopping approx. 7 inches above the wrist
• Velcro front closure
Thank you for your consideration. _________________ I’m all about that base. ’Bout that base. Yo Rebels.

Looks great guys. I always wondered why Luke had the hooks and the regular Snowspeeder pilot did not. Same with the rivots for the shoulder straps. I guess they wanted their hero to look a little different and seasoned? _________________ Blue Ridge Base CO 2013-2018

What about the location of the comm pad on the gloves? I'm guessing it should start an inch past the seam/wrist? _________________ Bloodstripe Squadron CO, Corellian Base | Event Coordinator |

I'd say make it more proportional: Approx 1/3 of the distance between the wrist and open end of the cuff, starting at the wrist end. Hard numbers cause issues when smaller or bigger pilots need to scale things up and down. _________________
