I am working on a Major Derlin - Hoth Base costume. I'll be posting in progress photos here for anyone who is interested in following along.
Movie prop (from the Star Wars Costumes Original Trilogy book):
Here is the beginning of the jacket, which I am scratch-building, basing the pattern off of an existing winter jacket of mine, using cotton twill fabrics.
Detail of the quilting

Jacket is finished. I added a zipper up the front and a snap at the top.

Used a pair of existing khaki pants and added the quilted pads on the front:
Also picked up a rank badge from a German seller on Etsy:

Doug Im excited to follow this. I want my own after meeting John Ratzenberger some years back. My seamstress is packed to the gills as always, so I need to have things in order before setting off to New Orleans to be measured.
The color for your upper yoke-would you call that brown or russet for the fabric you purchased? The Standard says a darker tan than the coat but it sure looks brown to me.
Looking forward to seeing more. _________________ Once I was Dewka, but now I'm just G'nott sH'urr

Thanks!
Yeah I would say the yoke is somewhere in the vicinity of chestnut, russet or burnt umber. I don't know what the manufacturer of this particular fabric calls it though. _________________ Doug C

Its definitely got those reddish, chestnut undertones. straight up brown wouldn't be right. If you look at the ref pic next to a beige based coat you can see even the lighter colour is tan tan under tones.
We are looking to rewrite the standards in the new format so can hopefully word them better. _________________ RLGSC, DXO

Absolutely agree on the undertones on the yoke. As our awesome XO mentioned we have standards rewrites on the to-do list- if anyone wants to help with that, shoot Empathy (tenebris) or myself a PM and we'll put you to work!
One suggestion for the build in progress- you might want to consider tightening the circumference of the padded collar and maybe adding some padding? It's laying a bit flat on your shoulders compared to the reference. His is almost like a funnel around his neck? Your build is looking really wonderful overall, and I'm just so happy to see it coming together so nicely! _________________ Legion Costuming Judge: Officers, Rebel Supporters

Thank for the suggestion. I may stuff the collar a bit more.
I borrowed a friend's boots and hat on the weekend to take a few test photos while my hat, belt and boots are worked on. Here's a preview...

I remade the collar. Originally I made it like one of those travel pillows. I read something recently that said the collar was more like a mandarin collar, so that's what I did, and added a bit of poly stuffing. It's actually fairly simple to make. I think it's much more accurate now. I was just guilty of overthinking.
Also, my hat from Etsy arrived, and I've added my goggles and begun weathering...
