Are there any approved TFA Troopers? I'm kicking around the idea of doing a build and need some pointers and suggestions on where to go for gear.

I only know that Phil1880 and stugpanzer (David Kurtz) have approved Resistance Troopers but I do not know if one is a TFA Trooper or not. I do not have enough knowledge about the Troopers in TFA and TLJ. I do not know how active Phil1880 and stugpanzer are on the forum so perhaps you should contact them via pm and them some questions about their costumes.

I have an approved TFA trooper and helped write the standard. What would you like to know?

I'm thinking about putting a kit together, but need recommendations for where to go for costume parts.

The first thing you need to do is review the standards, and for this costume they are pretty open ended. It appears that most of the costume parts are Soviet Union or other European military uniform parts, which can be found on Ebay or Etsy. There is also a facebook page dedicated to this trooper, but I don't think it is real active.

The helmet is/has been very problematic, so the builds I know of have just used soft caps. I heard someone just recently has re-created the helmet, but I don't have any details yet. A replica of the blaster (EL-16) that is the correct size, has also been a hard item to find. However, a correct version of the DH-17 (same as Rogue One, but not ANH) can be used.

For my build, I used a pair of US Army Vietnam era trousers, a mock-turtleneck (tan/beige) that I found at a Goodwill Store and the Soviet/Russian Afghanistan jacket (it is very thick and hot to troop in!). The boots I have are Fugu Superboots, but I also have the correct Po-Zu boots for my TFA officer as well.

That should be a good start for you.

I am considering doing a TLJ Trooper so I have brought myself back up to speed on this build, so if you have questions, fire away!

Looks like Todd gave you a great start. But I can also help with any questions you have.
