I am going to start work on this costume, and am looking for fabric suggestions for the tunic-vest:

A friend who does a lot of sewing says it looks like gabardine. _________________ Z'Rissa

I would say it is possibly gabardine, but maybe some type of wool blend. I made an officer vest and used a wool/felt blend.

If it's in keeping with the rest of the officer uniforms, I bet it's wool. _________________ Generic Clone Wars-era Jedi

I used a wool blend...the color is pretty good but the weight of wool is not...too thin. It probably is 100% wool but I can't find a good color

If you're unhappy with the way the fabric is draping, maybe try a lining? That may help add a bit of structure depending on the fabric you use.
Also, there may be reference images in this folder you'd find useful:

Yes, this is one of my questions! What type of fabric to buy? I thought garbadine would be a good choice because it wears well and is available in a large variety of colours. Also it would suit Australian conditions with it being very hot in summer and cold in winter. I would be looking at a fabric with good drape, colour and wearability. This costume is a good choice to have as a 'dress and wear' type of costume. As I could wear it to and from a troop site without having to tote a big awkward suitcase along with me. I will have to wait until the Australian winter before I can go looking for this type of fabric. Please keep discussing this costume, as I am interested in making one for myself. This costume would be a great 'second' costume for people looking for low maintence option. _________________ *******************************************************************

A linen with lining might work? You can see it has a slight texture. _________________ RLGSC, DXO

Yes, I visit the interstate fabric suppliers I will look at what options there are besides garberdine. However, because of the limited suppliers I have to work with I think my first choice will be garberdine for both the pants and the vest. Note the vest would be interlined so it has more body. Anyway I will continue this discussion only on my build thread and post colour samples etc.

I agree that a linen or similarly textured fabric looks correct. _________________ Legion Costuming Judge: Officers, Rebel Supporters
