I'm planning a Rebel Fleet Trooper and I'd like to attempt to be as screen-accurate as possible. I have questions about the pants.
The CRL indicates that the pants must be "light or medium grey pants with large cargo pockets-must be BDU style pants and not modified jeans."
I see that most people are buying the Rothco Grey BDU pants, but these appear to have significant differences from the original ANH RFT pants. Along with a colour difference, the Rothco pants have a pleat in the pocket and extra seams in the thigh.
Is it acceptable to make a pair of pants that looks like the screen-captured images of the movie pants?
Looking for feedback. Thanks! |

Yes, it is acceptable to make a pair of pants that look like the RFT pants that were used in ANH. I sewed my own pants. I tried to make the cargo pocket the way they are in the screen caps.

I'm also working on a modified pants, not using BDU pants instead. Patricia's pants also looks great, you can reference to her post. |

Thanks gang. Boot question:
I saw a perfect pair of boots today at a local Army Surplus store. They were brand new and looked great except the boots had a seam on the outside of the boot. These boots were a lot less money than the boots from Imperial Boots.
The CRL specifically states that there should be no zippers on the outside of the boot, but doesn't mention a seam.
What do people think? |

Do you have a photo of the boots? I think it would probably depend on how the whole boot looks like. A seam on the outside can change to look of a boot drastically. _________________ RAID GRRRL-Squad-Leader 2019 - present

We use East German jack boots. What I wear are called engineer boots.
If you want to make your own pants, it is not a problem. We know that the BDU's are not completely accurate. What I cannot seem to get across to people is CONSISTENCY. Have you seen a group of RFT's together? Put 12 random RFT's together and you'll see 12 different shades of fabric. That's why we suggest the off-the-shelf BDU's. We usually ask that you try to match your build with the others in your garrison. YMMV _________________ R.A.I.D. CO 2014-2019

Consistency has its merit. My husband and I are often the only two RFTs at an event. Two different cargo pants do look strange. He has a pair of grey Rothco BDU pants that were suggested here on the forum. I had to make my own cargo pants because at the time I did not fit in the larges grey Rothco BDU pants that were available and I could not find any other that would fit me. Due to the fact that quite a few RFTs of my base do not have the Rothco BDU pants, I decided to make mine similar to the ones in ANH. For some reason, most of them rather wear a jedi than an RFT so I ordered a pair of grey Rothco BDU pants size 3XL now that fit into them so that my husband and I wear all the same items. _________________ RAID GRRRL-Squad-Leader 2019 - present

Thanks for the feedback on the pants question.
It seems to me that almost every other character out there across both Legions has very strict rules about the costumes. The RFT recommended BDU pants seem to stand out as one of the few off-the-rack costumes, and often end up looking less authentic. Just my opinion.
I'm all for consistency, but I also don't see the harm in requiring costumes to be screen accurate. Once a rule is established it wouldn't take long for people to come up with a consistent but accurate pants design.
Having said all that, I will say that there are no other RFTs anywhere around me (Ottawa Canada is the closest group of Rebel Legion folks to me and there are no RFTs in Ottawa that I know of), so I wouldn't have to blend in anywhere locally.
I'm also at the beginning of my build so the cost of making pants is something I've been planning for.
Anyway, good discussion here. Thanks! |

Once again The BDU suggestion was for consistency. It also was to make it easier for someone to get an approvable costume together with off-the-rack stuff.
Make yours as accurate as you please. _________________ R.A.I.D. CO 2014-2019

Thanks navarre1095! The feedback is much appreciated! I'm really looking forward to getting started. I've been gathering materials and photos and will be getting into production hopefully mid summer.
I'll post photos for feedback as often as I can. Cheers! |
