Thareen "Ninefingers" Penumbra has a long history...she started out in a SW-universe game of Traveller in the early 1980s. She is half human and half Elvish...no, not the Tolkien Elves, the Elfquest Elves are more like her people. A bit less ethereal. A bit more grounded.
The old back story was that she was discovered by a Jedi fleeing the Purge looking for somewhere to hide. She was an orphan living on the edge of the Karadain civilization. This Jedi took her in, realized the Force was with her, and began her training. The Purge got him before her training was complete.
The new back story, which explains her presence in the Old Jedi Order, is this: Thareen was scooped up from certain death abandoned in the woods by a Jedi survey team. She was trained, and almost knighted, when her master, Cha-Yan Shiaren, went berserk and went to the Dark Side.
In an over-reaction bred of the betrayal by Dooku, she was cast out as well. Her fencing master, Mace Windu, gave her the parting gift of two Hurikan crystals, which she wears in a leather bag around her neck.
She spent several years in the Republic Scout Corps as a surveyor, spending long missions out alone with her small craft mapping uncharted regions of the Rimward Frontier. In the middle of one of these long journeys, she began having visions of the death of the Jedi Order. Premonitions? Visions of something actually happening? She had no idea.
Word travels slowly in that part of the galaxy, and when she finally learned that the Republic and the Jedi Order was no more, she knew she was now an outlaw on the run. However, since she never was formally knighted, there was no record of her as a Jedi Knight.
Here is where the narratives meet up again between the old version and the new. After a new paint job on her scout craft, she began work under the radar, taking odd courier, bodyguard and bouncer assignments, teaching martial arts, and looking for signs of what she would need to do next.
She survived the Dark Times, often by the skin of her teeth. And by the time she emerged after the Battle of Endor, the New Jedi Order could not do otherwise but to say she was a fully realized Jedi Master.
She skates the edge between light and dark, much like her fencing master and mentor Mace Windu. She has never crossed over. As half-Karadain her respect for the living Force, especially as manifest in Nature, is too strong.
Her symbol is the leaf of the Bitter-root plant...a plant called, in the tongue of the Karadain, "thareen."
